Richard “Dick” B. Harris
SCARBOROUGH – Richard “Dick” B. Harris, Sr. passed away on March 15, 2023 at the Veterans Home in Scarborough at the age of 88.
Born in Portland to Omah and Irene (Yates), he grew up in South Portland and graduated from SPHS in ‘53.
He entered the US Army after graduation and served four years in Okinawa before returning home to attend Boston University. He went to work for Texaco and then the family business, The Harris Company on Chandler’s Wharf, before going into Real Estate, which he loved.
He spent many summers with his family at Ferry Beach and Camp Ellis where he enjoyed boating and clamming. He loved hosting “Group Therapy” with the family and watching the grandkids swim in the pool on a warm summer day.
Later in life he and his wife, Judith Mooney, ran GADCO and Animal Antics, both pet supply stores in Falmouth and South Portland.
He is survived by his sons Richard (R.B.), Charles and wife Jennifer, Jonathan and wife Sandra, and daughter Kate.; as well as his grandchildren Kailey, Sydnee and Jeremy. In addition he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Robert “Bob” and Ann Largay, sister-in-law Catherine Largay, sister Joan; and an extended family of nieces, nephews and close friends.
He was a past President of the Portland Lion’s Club and founding member of the Thursday Night Poker game.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough (A unit and Res Care) who took care of dad with kindness and dignity during his time there with special thanks to Kelly, Chrisanna, Brittany, Janet, and Michelle.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.
