MERRIMACK, N.H. — Authorities say a speeding car on Thursday slammed into a tollbooth and burst into flames, killing the driver.

Department of Transportation spokesman Bill Boynton said the car was seen speeding on the Everett Turnpike for several miles Thursday afternoon. State police say the 2006 BMW caused a minor accident with a pickup truck, narrowly missed a motorcyclist and a large dump truck and then nearly struck a state police cruiser.

The car then crashed into the booth at an exit off-ramp in Merrimack and burst into flames. The driver died at the scene.

Boynton says a tollbooth worker escaped without injury and there was no structural damage to the tollbooth.
