Joyce Jean Hallidy
PORTLAND – Joyce Jean Hallidy, of Portland, passed away at 75 State Street on Sept. 10, 2022, at the age of 72. She died of complications of Multiple Sclerosis. Joyce was born on Feb. 2, 1950 in Kirksville, Mo.. She was the oldest daughter of Dr. Fisk E. Hallidy and Neva Jean (Beard) Hallidy.
Joyce pursued her nursing studies and graduated from the university of Connecticut. She attended Portland schools and was a graduate of Deering High School, where she was voted Miss “D” in her senior year. She loved art classes and played the clarinet. She often “taught” school to her two younger sisters. Joyce chose to work with women grappling with alcohol addiction at Crossroads in Windham. She was married to Dennis Beauchene and later divorced. She was an avid reader and a good cook. She was diagnosed with M.S. at 38. She began focusing on her true interest in art and did many beautiful abstract oil paintings and pastel portraits of family pets at a local pet shop.
Joyce was very brave in her subsequent years with M.S. She never complained as her life became increasingly difficult and physically challenging. She continued to work and donate to animal rights. She became a vegetarian because of her convictions. She also donated funds to provide wheelchairs for disabled people, always focusing on others, not herself.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her two sisters, Judy L. DeMena of Portland and Jody A. Libby and spouse Ray A. Libby of Portland; three nieces, Chelsey L. Puttre of California, Md., Courtney M Libby, and Lindsay A. Libby of Portland, and a nephew, Nial C. DeMena of Worcester, Mass.
The family held a private service with no visitation. The family would like to thank the staff of 75 State Street for their dedication and kindness.
