Marilyn Rose Scott

PORTLAND – Marilyn Rose Scott, beloved wife, stepmom, Nana, aunt, and friend, was born on July 14, 1943 in Baltimore, Md., and passed peacefully in Portland, Maine, on Dec. 1, 2022.

Marilyn, the youngest of the six children of Harry and Elsie Matter, had a natural elegance and enthusiasm for life. She was practical and gracious, and had a good sense of humor. Her family and friends recount many adventures and fun times.

Marilyn grew up in Baltimore. In the 1960s she joined the Peace Corps and moved to Salvador, Brazil. There she met and married Ian Scott. While in Brazil, Marilyn completed her Bachelors degree in English literature and continued her work with the Peace Corps. After Ian’s retirement, they moved to Massachusetts and took on an opportunity, and became partners of Wayland Travel agency. This blossomed into new friendships, and years of much enjoyed travel. They were well “chosen” ambassadors to remote as well as popular destinations. When home, they were often found hosting meals or overnight stays.

After Ian passed away, Marilyn moved to Portland, where she enjoyed the company of friends, volunteering at the Boys and Girls club, and summers in Cushing. Her last year of life was lived at the Sam L. Cohen Households at Cedars in Portland. There, not only did she receive the care she needed, she became part of a community, which she said felt like home.

Marilyn was a good listener and good at keeping in touch. She nurtured her relationships and had the gift of wonderful, loyal friends. She had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren, Gavin and Ana.

Marilyn is preceded by her husband Ian, four siblings; Harry, Mary, Barbara and Roberta. She is survived by her stepchildren Jane (Larry) and Paul (Joanna); her grandchildren, Gavin and Ana; her sister Delphine; and her nieces and nephews. We will cherish our time with Marilyn, and remember her with appreciation, love, and gratitude.
