Cape Elizabeth resident David Rogers makes music under the name Tremolo Fields.

A debut album called “Still As Can Be” will be released in April, and the first track off it, “Two Neurons,” is a scintillating electronic pop jewel.

Rogers grew up in Iowa City, Iowa, and picked up a guitar as a teenager. With music as his constant obsession, Rogers started making mix tapes, writing songs, playing in bands and organizing shows and eventually performed throughout the Midwest.

He stepped away from music for a decade and worked in academia before leaving that field to work on music again. In March 0f 2021 Rogers and his family moved to Maine to be closer to extended family. Rogers said he has found the Portland music scene to be kind and inspiring.

On the track “Two Neurons,” Rogers plays electric guitar, sings lead and backing vocals and plays most of the swelling pads (digital synthesizer) and drum machine sections. Brett Bullion played additional drum machine and produced the album, and Con Davison played bass.

Tremolo Fields is a name that connects Rogers to Iowa where he spent time biking and running through the countryside. He explained that tremolo is an audio effect that takes the note and raises and lowers the volume. This constant rise and fall reminds Rogers about how pursuing his passion of music comes with many highs and lows, but that he’ll keep moving forward with it.

“It’s like running on gravel roads with lots of hills. This is a lesson I didn’t understand in my 20s, so the name is a constant reminder to embrace it all and keep going,” Rogers said.
