KENNEBUNK – Chloe Matthews has enjoyed swimming for some time. A member of the Kennebunk High school swim team, Matthews, a senior, will carry that tradition with her when she attends Union College in Schenectady, New York, in the fall.
She likes swimming for a couple of reasons.
” I like how it is an individual sport, but there is a team aspect to it,” she said. ” I can compete in a couple of different ways.”
Matthews has been selected as the winner of the 2022-2023 Maine Principals’ Association Award, which was established in 1984 to recognize students for academic excellence and good citizenship. Each member school names a senior class student as its award recipient. Award winners and their principals are invited to an Honors Luncheon each spring. Each recipient is eligible for one of several $1,000 scholarships.
“Chloe is a tremendous student, person, and friend to many,” said KHS Principal Jeremie Sirois. “When thinking about the selection of this award Chloe instantly came to mind. She is kind, compassionate, and when she moves on to her next adventure it will be a tremendous loss to Kennebunk High School. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Chloe.”
Matthews said she was “excited, happy and extremely thankful,” when informed she was chosen as Kennebunk High School’s MPA winner.
“I try to be a good person and being the best version of myself pays off,” she responded when asked what winning the award means to her.
Matthews has achieved academic success throughout her high school career, excelling in many International Baccalaureate, post-secondary, honors, and college level classes, KHS officials said. She is a two-sport athlete, playing lacrosse as well as swimming. She is a member of the National Art Honor Society, Peer Helpers, Yearbook, Girl Talk, and is an intern in the school’s Athletic Department.
Matthews plans to major in marketing and visual arts at Union College, where she will also compete on the swim team.
She is the daughter of Larry and Kristin Matthews of Kennebunk.
