Time to focus on community center

To the editor,

Time and time again, Scarborough residents have voiced a desire for a Community Center and concern about traffic congestion. Time and time again, the Town Council seems to approve yet one more developer’s request for an override of caps on construction permits. In the meantime, little progress is made on projects that have been analyzed and discussed year after year, i.e. schools, Community Center. As the new Council begins its work, I hope that it works collaboratively with town boards and committees to prioritize building projects benefitting residents, like a Community Center, rather than projects which accrue profits for developers.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
