Mainers remain in third with loss at Laconia
Brian Mims led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and scored the go-ahead run on a single by James Davison to lift the Laconia Muskrats (20-15) to a 3-2 win over the visiting Sanford Mainers (17-15) in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game Tuesday night.
The Mainers remain in third place in the Northern Division, 11/2 games behind the Muskrats and 21/2 behind first-place Vermont.
After giving up single runs in the first and second, Sanford tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by Nate Stepna.
Sanford starter David Rosenberg gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits, striking out three and walking one over 61/3 innings.
Sam Dexter hit two doubles for Sanford.
TENNIS
ISTANBUL CUP: Top-seeded Venus Williams was upset by Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko in the first round, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Bondarenko managed three service breaks in the opening set and took a 5-2 lead in the second before Williams rallied, winning four consecutive games and serving at 6-5 for the set.
CROATIA OPEN: Borna Coric of Croatia beat Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-3 in hot and humid conditions at Umag, Croatia, to reach the second round.
FOOTBALL
COLLEGE: Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops said reinstated running back Joe Mixon deserves a chance to redeem himself after being charged with punching a woman in the face.
Asked at Big 12 media days why he hasn’t distanced himself from Mixon, Stoops said violence toward women should never be tolerated. But he said the redshirt freshman, after serving a season-long suspension last year, has other standards to meet as well.
• After dropping the sport in December, along with rifle and bowling, Alabama-Birmingham will reinstate football for 2017 and remain an FBS program.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Danielle Robinson scored 18 points, and Sophia Young-Malcolm added 15 with 10 rebounds to help the San Antonio Stars beat the visiting Indiana Fever, 80-62.
Kayla McBride added 14 points and Danielle Adams had 12, hitting a season-high four 3-pointers for the Stars. San Antonio shot 60 percent (27 of 45) from the field.
• Stephanie Dolson scored 18 points, Ivory Latta added 14 and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt had 13 to help the visiting Washington Mystics beat the Tulsa Shock, 76-69.
COLLEGE: Michigan State Athletic Director Mark Hollis will be the vice chairman of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball committee this season and lead the selection of the field of 68 for the 2016-17 season.
SOCCER
U.S. WOMEN: The national team added a pair of September matches against Australia to its World Cup victory tour.
The team will face the Matildas on Sept. 17 at Ford Field in Detroit before a rematch on Sept. 20 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
FRIENDLY CANCELED: A friendly between Brazil and Argentina planned for September in San Francisco was canceled as part of the fallout from the investigation into alleged corruption involving FIFA.
The two Argentine businessmen who own the marketing company that had the rights for the game remain under house arrest in Argentina after having been indicted in May by the U.S. Justice Department.
