Cynthia R. Thompson

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Cynthia R. Thompson, born in Nashua, N.H. on July 17, 1937, passed away Oct. 6, 2022 at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, Fla. She was the daughter of the late Donald T. and Ethel (Shenton) Hardy also of Nashua, N.H.

Cynthia was the widow of David G. Thompson with whom she shared 62 wonderful years of marriage before David passed away in 2016. For many years, Cynthia and David made their home in Hudson, N.H. where together, they owned and operated Thompson’s Market alongside Bob and Lorraine Thompson and Liberty Millwork with the Rodgers Brothers family. While in Hudson, N.H., Cynthia was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a member of Hudson Junior Women’s Club.

Cynthia and David moved to Belmont, N.H. and enjoyed many summers together boating on Lake Winnipesaukee. It was during this time that Cynthia joined Zonta International, eventually becoming District 1 Governor which included most of New England and Nova Scotia, Canada. Cynthia made many friends during her Zonta membership and enjoyed several international lifelong friendships. While in Belmont, N.H., Cynthia also started her own accounting business, General Ledger, supporting local companies with their accounting needs.

The next chapter in Cynthia and David’s life found them in Scarborough where they traded lake life for beach life. Cynthia volunteered during election seasons in various capacities and was an active member of the First Congregation Church of Scarborough, helping to organize the yearly Christmas Fair. It was in this area that Cynthia enjoyed many family functions with her daughter Jill’s family.

Finally, Cynthia moved to Ft. Myers, Fla. in July of 2021 where again, she was close to her daughter, Jill and family.

Over the years Cynthia and David travelled extensively throughout most of Europe, including the countries of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Romania while they were still under Communist rule. Further adventures took them to Egypt and Israel and well as the Virgin Islands and Costa Rica. They also visited many areas of the United States, checking off almost all 50 states. Cynthia is responsible for her grandchildren’s love of Canasta and poached eggs, art and puzzles, and kept them warm with hand-knitted socks each Christmas.

Cynthia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend and she will be missed by many.

Cynthia is survived by her son, Peter-Jon Thompson and wife, Cathy of Concord, N.H. and her daughter, Jill Gravel and her husband, Jerome of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and her grandchildren Emily, Hannah, and Alexander Thompson and Amy Gravel with husband Madison Jordan and David Gravel with fiancée, Alyssa Gilbert.

Survivors also include a brother and sister-in-law, Robert M. Thompson, Jr. and Lorraine of Zephyrhills, Fla., also sister-in-law, Orma Thompson of Merrimack, N.H.

Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Cynthia’s life at 11 a.m. on Nov. 12 at the First Congregation Church of Scarborough at 161 Black Point Rd.

In lieu of flowers, Cynthia’s family asks for contributions in Cynthia’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Foundation

of America.
