I write to thank state Rep. Melanie Sachs, Freeport, for trying her best to fix the flawed Property Tax Stabilization program passed this year. Thank you for voting no, along with the majority of Taxation Committee members, after the sponsor would not fix the serious flaws. That the sponsor of the bill chose to sneak it through anyway is disappointing.
I served in the Maine Legislature. I understand what this law will do. The bill has no income/asset limits. The wealthiest homeowners will get huge tax breaks – not just those who really need the help. State funding to meet the town’s revenue losses is guaranteed for one year, then the costs shift, hurting Freeport’s vital public services.
Vote for Melanie Sachs. She has provided thoughtful and true tax relief for seniors, working families, and veterans in Freeport through other bills. We need her in the state Legislature.
