I’d like to take exception to a letter published Aug. 27 (“Letter to the editor: College students don’t need debt relief”).
The financials were very, very different back then. We didn’t have private entities lending to students. I too graduated with debt from Orono in the 70s. My debt was with the federal government at a rate of 2 percent.
I paid it off in full at the minimum payment required because my savings account paid me 5.5 percent and my mortgage was 11.75 percent. So I paid off the mortgage instead. Bring this system back and we won’t have the problems with debt we do today.
