BIDDEFORD — Eugene Arthur Benner, 85, passed on into everlasting life on Wednesday August 10, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.
Gene was born on 06/23/37 in South Thomaston, ME, the son of the late Ginnie (Graves) and Oren Benner.
Gene was a veteran having served in the United States Army and the National Guard. He also ran a business with his father, Thomaston Steel, for many years.
Gene was a longtime member of Alcoholics Anonymous, having 52 ½ years of sobriety at the time of his death. He was a huge power of example in the halls of AA, having been elected to many official positions. Gene talked the talk and walked the walk, and he helped an immeasurable amount of alcoholics into sobriety, sponsoring many.
Gene co-founded and strongly supported the Oasis Club in Saco, Maine. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Milestone Foundation and served as vice-president for two years and then as president for one year plus.
Gene was very involved in his surrounding communities, serving on many committees, including several years on the Board of Directors of Ocean Community Federal Credit Union, now known as Northeast Credit Union. He also earned a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of volunteer services at the Maine Your Center.
Gene is survived by his wife of 15 years, Ann-Marie (Cyr) Benner, one son, Jeff (Brenda) Benner, and one daughter, Jeannie (Joel) Prescott, three grandchildren: Amanda, Craig, and Aaron, and three great-grandchildren: Trinity, Breanna, and Emma.
He was predeceased by his parents, and two sisters: Marilyn (Benner) Watts and Alfreda (Benner) Blood.
