Liz Cheney’s loss in the Wyoming Republican congressional primary is the nail in the coffin for the Republican Party we all knew before Donald J. Trump. It is the signal that many amoral Republicans have gone so far to the deep, dark right that they will go to any measure to subvert the rule of law.
Pre-Trump, Liz Cheney was a Republican darling, following in her father’s footsteps, the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference and third highest ranking member. It is astounding that she could fall so far because of one corrupt politician: Trump.
And now that most Democrats see the shade of dark red that the party has become, she is an icon of law and order that most of us crave. A rules-based system, protected by principled politicians, regardless of their party affiliation, will win against the perversion of the Trump years. If it doesn’t, then God help us all.
