Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter to perform

The grand finale of New Gloucester Public Library’s free outdoor summer concert series promises not to disappoint. Based in Chicago, performer Robbie Fulks is an alt-country singer-songwriter who has been nominated for two Grammy Awards.

He has appeared on famous stages such as the Grand Ole Opry, Austin City Limits, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and the Today show. His recordings have featured artists Lucinda Williams, Buck Owens and Linda Gail Lewis.

The concert takes place at the library gazebo, 379 Intervale Road, from 5-6:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 7. Bring a chair or blanket. In case of rain, it will move inside the Community Building located next door.

Additionally, New Gloucester’s own Bite ME Food Truck will be on site to provide sustenance for concert goers. The event is underwritten by the New Gloucester Public Library, New Gloucester Parks and Recreation and the Friends of the Library.

Book donations and sales

Plans are gearing up for the Friends of the New Gloucester Public Library second book sale of the year. They will have two opportunities for people to donate new or gently used adult, children’s or young adult books. Games and puzzles will also be accepted.

The two book collection dates are from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at the library and from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 6, at the New Gloucester Community Building, 381 Intervale Road.

Donations are limited to two cartons or four grocery-sized bags. Containers are not returnable, and staff members are not able to assist in unloading donations.

All donations should be clean and free of odors, mold and mildew. Reader’s Digest Condensed books, encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, VHS tapes, DVDs and CDs are not accepted.

The Friends will hold a Book and Bake Sale from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, in the Community Building. New this year, a members-only Preview Book Sale, from noon to 2 p.m. will be featured Saturday, Aug. 6. People will have the opportunity to sign up to become a member that day if they are not currently enrolled.

Celebrating Celebrations

View the current exhibition, “Celebrating Celebrations,” at the Aug. 6 open house at the History Barn, 383 Intervale Road. This free exhibit, sponsored by New Gloucester Historical Society, is from 9 a.m. to noon and open to the public.

Shaker fiber arts workshop

Local fiber artist Betsey Leslie will present a class on how to make a needle-felted blue jay bird from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 18. Students of all levels and ages will learn how to sculpt and shape wool and to create detailed decorations for feather patterns.

All materials will be provided. Each kit will include enough supplies to make at least two blue jays.

Participation is in-person, hybrid or virtual. The cost, which includes shipping the kit, ranges from $65-$78, depending on the method used and if a Friends of the Shakers discount applies. Current members of The Friends of the Shakers receive $5 off each workshop. Go to friendsoftheshakers.org to join.
