Eric Purvis, left, received the Private Sector Award from the Biddeford Saco Rotary Club for his years of service to and leadership of Thornton Academy, and for his efforts to make Thornton a first class school for its students and staff. Purvis has been the President of Thornton’s Board of Trustees since 2009.
Purvis is pictured with former Thornton Academy Trustee Bill Kany, who presented Purvis with the award at a Rotary Club meeting. “He has provided a calm and strong voice throughout very challenging and constantly changing times,” said Kany. “TA and our community will forever be indebted to him for his leadership.”
The Private Sector Award is awarded to a citizen whose good works have been performed independently of their employment, usually in the private sector. Recipients work for the public good, outside of his or her employment.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
