In his March 3 column “Through My Lens,” Abdi Nor Iftin says, “It’s time to talk about global gun control.”
I agree. Let’s talk about how bad an idea gun control is, at any level.
Throughout history, evil people, gangs and governments have sought to disarm those they would subjugate, conquer and slaughter (or impose “mandates” upon). It certainly makes their jobs a lot easier and safer.
A recent news report stated that “The Ukrainian government is handing out guns to ordinary citizens.” This would not be necessary if those “ordinary citizens” – who are the militia – already owned guns.
America’s founding fathers wisely secured that right for us by codifying it in the Second Amendment of our Constitution. As Patrick Henry said in his speech at the Virginia Ratifying Convention in 1887, “The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able may have a gun.”
The Ukrainian government is now belatedly recognizing the wisdom of that. Let us hope that those “ordinary citizens” in Ukraine are successful in defending their homeland.
