Look to Lena for history lessons
If you were a follower of Lena Megquier’s diary on the Windham Historical Society’s Facebook page last year, you’ll be happy to know that due to the generosity of fellow follower Becky Delaware, the society now has Lena’s diary for the year 1899. A few diary entries a day are being posted now. Once caught up, postings will be done on the day comparable to Lena’s entry. This is such a wonderful way to learn history through the eyes of a young woman from South Windham and the stories of her days as a housemaid in Portland’s West End at the end of the 20th century.
Coffee and conversation
Windham veterans are cordially invited to the Weekly Vet Coffee that happens every Wednesday morning from 9-11 a.m. at the Windham Veterans Center behind the Windham Hannaford. Each week, about two dozen vets stop by for a cup of coffee and some yummy donuts and enjoy a little camaraderie with fellow vets. It’s a good way to make new friends and will certainly get you out of the winter doldrums.
Senior shopping
Windham seniors are invited to join Windham Parks & Recreation for a weekly shopping trip to North Windham. Every Thursday, seniors who can’t drive or get to the store on their own can hitch a ride in the Parks & Rec van. The trip is free and the route and times may vary slightly each week based on the number of participants who reserve a spot. You must register to participate by calling 892-1905.
Lifeguard certification
The American Red Cross is offering a lifeguard certification training program at the Westbrook Community Center’s John P. Davan Indoor Pool during the first two weekends in April. The classes run from 2-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday each weekend. The training will teach participants the valuable skills needed to save lives in emergency situations. Once completed, the course provides a two-year lifeguard certification as well as a two-year first aid and CPR/AED for lifeguard certification. You must be at least 15 years of age to qualify for this program. For more information, contact John Smith at 854-0676 or email JWsmith@westbrook.me.US.
