BIDDEFORD — Long-time local developer and community builder Doug Sanford was recently named this year’s recipient of the prestigious A. William Kany, Jr. Leadership Award for his many contributions over the years to the success of Biddeford’s downtown mill district.

The award was presented by selection committee lead Bill Kany during the Biddeford & Saco Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting, held virtually on Jan. 27, according to statement from the Chamber.

The Kany Leadership Award is given annually to a local leader who has significantly contributed to the growth and success of the Biddeford & Saco region over many years. It is a collaborative effort spearheaded by three local civic and community organizations: Heart of Biddeford, Saco Main Street, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Beginning in 2004, Sanford purchased multiple vacant mill buildings in downtown Biddeford, eventually redeveloping over 1 million square feet of empty space into productive use. In the ceremony, Sanford was cited for his entrepreneurial efforts pioneering the revitalization of multiple mill properties for expanded housing,
commercial operations, and as a hub for both incubating new businesses as well as a space for community development. His commitment to maintaining the architectural integrity of the mills and developing a mill museum to honor the historical activities at the properties was also recognized. Having recently sold the properties, it was deemed the perfect time to bestow this award on Sanford for the lasting legacy he championed in bringing the downtown area back to life as the center of civic activity.

In accepting the award, Sanford said, “I am humbled and honored to be recognized. I have been fortunate over the years to be surrounded by great people. As much as we’ve made so much progress locally over the years, I know the best is yet to come here.”

Sanford joins an illustrious list of past winners of this annual award, including Roland Eon, Carrie Shaw, Wayne Sherman, Bryce Milne, David Flood, Bill Johnson, John Andrews, Dean Wolfahrt, Leo Menard, Tammy Ackerman, Renee O’Neil, Monsignor Rene Mathieu, and most recently Lou Chantigny.

The award given was a custom painting by local artist Eileen Foley of the mill complex as seen from the Saco River, emblematic of the idea that a rising tide lifts all boats which aptly captures the essence of Sanford’s significant impact on the area.
