Harpswell’s Select Board is beginning the process of filling a vacancy on the School Administrative District 75 board of directors, which governs schools in Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Harpswell and Topsham.
Town Administrator Kristi Eiane and Selectwoman Jane Covey have proposed a plan to fill the seat at the Select Board’s March 17 meeting.
Under the plan, applicants would apply for the position in person at the town office or online at harpswell.maine.gov by Feb. 25. The Select Board would then interview candidates during the first two weeks of March.
The vacancy resulted from the Jan. 19 resignation of Alison Hawkes, who left halfway through her three-year term. Hawkes, who called the SAD 75 school board “toxic” at its Jan. 27 meeting, opposed the district’s COVID policies, which include a mask mandate.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
