AUGUSTA — The Harold Alfond Foundation is committing up to $35 million to MaineGeneral efforts to build a new, $322 million consolidated regional hospital in north Augusta.
The donation, announced at the future site of the hospital, next to the cancer treatment center which bears the late Alfond’s name, comes in two parts.
The first is contingent on the proposed new state-of-the-art hospital winning state approval, and on a new interchange being built to provide access to the site directly from Interstate 95. If those conditions are met, Gregory W. Powell, chairman of the Harold Alfond Foundation said, the foundation will grant the project $25 million.
Additionally, the foundation will match, dollar for dollar, the donations of others in the community, up to $10 million.
Scott Bullock, MaineGeneral Health president and chief executive officer, said the donation shows the late Harold Alfond is making good on one of his favorite sayings — that he “intended to retire 10 years after he passed away.”
Bullock said they expect to learn whether the hospital’s Certificate of Need application, required to build it, is approved by the state by July 1.
If approved, the hospital could open by January of 2015.
