Scarborough Town Manager Tom Hall said he expects to make a decision on a new police chief in the next few weeks.
A second round of recruiting yielded better results in Scarborough’s search to replace longtime Chief Robert Moulton, who retired in July after more than 40 years with the department.
The new chief must be qualified to lead the Scarborough Police Department at a time now and in the future when police are doing more than just enforcing the law, but also working with those with mental illness and drug addiction, Hall said.
South Portland, which also had an unfruitful first round of recruitment for a new police chief, plans to re-open its search in the coming weeks with the goal of hiring someone by early 2022, according to City Manager Scott Morelli.
Timothy B. Sheehan resigned in April after 14 months as police chief in South Portland. Interim Chief James DiGianvittorio was hired to aid in the transition after Deputy Chief Amy Berry retired in August.
