Photo exhibit spotlights Maine, Russian works
The opening reception for an exhibit of photographs called “Bridges of Friendship” will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at Baxter Memorial Library, 71 South St.
The exhibit features photography by members of the Portland Camera Club and Photo Club Spolokhi in Archangel, Russia.
Dennis Marrotte of Westbrook, spokesman for the Bridges of Friendship exchange, showed the Gorham Town Council photos by Richard Sawyer of South Portland and Yuliya Popova of Archangel last week. He also noted that the Archangel Club’s name means “the flashes of the Northern lights.”
The exhibit runs through Oct. 29 and features 30 photos.
Gorham paving firm pays respects
A Lewiston Public Works official praised a Gorham construction company that halted its work in Lewiston to show respect for a funeral possession.
Lewiston city paving inspector Justin Bisson told the American Journal that employees from Glidden Excavating and Paving Company were performing some preliminary street construction work on Walnut Street on Sept. 10 when “We looked down the road and we saw the funeral possession coming.”
“We didn’t have a clue” who it was, Bisson said.
Bisson said Glidden Project Manager Troy Morse stopped the work and lined up his crew to show respect for the deceased as the procession passed by. Bisson said they stood with hard hats under their arms.
“I got to stand with those guys,” Bisson said with pride.
COVID-19 at Gorham schools
As of Sept. 13, Gorham schools have had 18 cases of COVID-19 since classes resumed.
Great Falls Elementary had four positive cases; Gorham high and middle schools, two each; Village Elementary, one; none have been documented at Narragansett Elementary.

60 years ago
The Westbrook American reported Sept. 13, 1961, that Richard Bridges of Main Street was on a fishing trip and visiting the Mount Blue area of Rangeley.
U.S. taxpayer debt
The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on Sept. 9 that the U.S. public debt was $28,427,291,338,987.36.
