Buxton police didn’t have to look far to find the suspect they say robbed the Hannaford supermarket on Portland Road in Buxton last week.

Buxton Police Chief Michael Grovo said 23-year-old Jamie Vandegraaf of Scarborough was charged with the robbery while he was being held at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.

He was being held on a previous robbery charge in connection with the theft from a Shaw’s Supermarket in Westbrook on March 31 and a probation violation, which makes him ineligible for bail.

He is on probation from a 2013 holdup of the TD Bank branch at 449 Forest Ave. in Portland. Vandegraaf had been sentenced in December 2013 to three years in jail in that case, with all but 18 months suspended.

Grovo said Vandegraaf entered the Hannaford store in Buxton on April 2 and went to the service desk where he demanded money. Vandegraaf’s demeanor and language came across as threatening and he left the supermarket with an undetermined amount of cash.

“He insinuated that he had a weapon,” Grovo said.

Investigators from the Buxton Police Department interviewed witnesses and reviewed the store’s surveillance tape to identify Vandegraaf, Grovo said.

Vandegraaf has been held at the jail since April 3 after he was captured near the Maine Mall by South Portland police and members of the U.S. Marshal’s Service violent offender task force. Earlier that day, Portland police responded to the report of a suspicious vehicle on Sheridan Street. When they tried to pull the car over, it sped off. The driver jumped from the moving car on Adams Street and was hit by the car but escaped. Portland police said the driver was Vandegraaf and issued a photo of one of his neck tattoos with the name “Chloe.”
