The select board race in North Yarmouth presents a true contrast in candidates.
The incumbent has only served one year and his report card is abysmal. He proposes an over 12% increase in municipal spending in one year with a property tax increase to fund it. He chaired the committee that allows 50-foot-tall buildings in the Village Center built no more than 20 feet from the road. The Cumberland County Sheriff substation that protected the town for years is gone. He directed the town to develop plans to allow retail marijuana stores in the Village Center. Residents had to fight to save Sharp’s Field from development. The TIF has increased property taxes for residents outside the TIF District. Imagine what he would do in three more years. We need a new direction now. Elect Paul Hodgetts to the select board.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
