South Portland came in second this week in the state Department of Education’s annual Farm to School Cook-Off, an annual contest geared toward promoting locally-source food and foodservice.
The team, made up of Sam Messann, 11, and Lisa Riley, cook and baker at James Otis Kaler Elementary School, faced off against the RSU 12 Whitefield Wildcats.
Both teams beat out two other competitors to get into the May 5 final competition, which took place in Augusta. The teams were required to prepare a breakfast and lunch meal, using eggs and parsnips. The teams had to showcase locally-sourced food in their dishes. South Portland prepared Corn Flakes and turkey bacon-encrusted French toast with a hot blueberry and banana bowl for breakfast, and a banh mi wrap with parsnip fries.
