OLD ORCHARD BEACH
THE SALVATION ARMY Advisory Board has named Gary Curtis of Old Orchard Beach to its board of directors. Curtis is retired from management careers in sports and property sales and served as a crisis intervention councilor at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. He is a former Dirigo Boys State director and a member of the Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce. Curtis is a member of the town’s License Review Board, the Junior Achievement board of directors and is involved in several future education initiatives, including the 20/20 Commission.

SOLDIERS MEMORIAL LIBRARY will partner with the Portland Public Library to issue Portland library cards for Cumberland and York county residents and some Oxford County residents. The card grants access to resources not available locally. Individuals who wish to sign up for a card at Soldiers Memorial Library must provide a valid Maine driver’s license or two other forms of identification, listing their name and current address. Ages 12-18 must show a photo school identification and have a parent or guardian co-sign the form. For details, call Pam at 625-4650.

THE YORK HOSPITAL Auxiliary is accepting applications for three $3,000 scholarships it will award to graduating seniors. Senior students attending York, Wells, Kennebunk, Marshwood or Noble high schools or Traip or Berwick academies, who plan to pursue a course of study in the medical field, are eligible to apply. Applications are available in school guidance offices, at the York Hospital volunteer office or on the Web site at http://newsroom.yorkhospital.com. Application deadline is by April 15. SANFORD PARKS and Recreation has announced winners of its Annual Winterfest events. Top winners of an Ice Fishing Derby included Isaac Valley and Elijah Perron in the boy’s category and Ella Wentworth, Adrianne McAllister and Emily Cormack in the girl’s division. Winners of the Bowl-A-Rama bowling tournament included Dan Anatra, Bailey Chretien, Jordan Snow and Cassidy Plante.
WELLS
THE GULF OF MAINE COUNCIL on the Marine Environment has presented the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve with a Visionary Award for sustained excellence in science, communication, partnerships, education and stewardship of the Gulf of Maine ecosystems.
The council cited the reserve’s coastal education programs in helping to foster environmental awareness of estuarine and coastal ecosystems.
SACO
THORNTON ACADEMY senior student Dana Tripp has won the Classical Association of New England’s regional writing contest for her poem “Ploughman’s Song,” based on the story of Demeter and Persephone. The contest was open to all students taking Latin, Greek or Classics in New England middle and secondary schools. Tripp, a Latin III/IV Poetry student, received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond as her prize.
