Tryouts for the Libby-Mitchell American Legion baseball teams for the summer 2015 season will be held Sunday at 8:30 a.m. at Scarborough High. The tryout is for all Scarborough High and Cape Elizabeth High baseball players wishing to play American Legion baseball for Libby-Mitchell. Players should bring with them glove, hat and spikes, and show up ready to play. Players should also bring with them the original copy of their birth certificate, and also have the time to fill out a tryout information form. The Portland Middle School Hockey program will be registering players for the 2014-15 season Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the Portland Ice Arena at 225 Park Ave. The program is open to all fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth-graders who reside in Portland. The Dave Child memorial golf tournament will be held Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Mere Creek Golf Club in Brunswick. It will be a nine-hole scramble with a shotgun start. The cost is $50 per player and includes cart, barbeque and prizes. Each team will have four players. The goal is to install a lighted flagpole at Mere Creek Golf Club dedicated to the memory of Dave.
During his golfing career in Maine, Dave managed three different courses: Mere Creek, Highland Green and Bridgton Highlands. He was a rules official and a director for the Maine State Golf Association, and an executive director of the Maine State Golf Course Superintendents’ Association.
