WISCASSET
In an effort to raise funds to fix its steeple, St. Philip’s Church in Wiscasset is holding a baked bean and casserole supper on July 31 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Everyone in the community is invited to the supper, which will feature baked beans, casseroles, salads, breads, beverage and dessert.
When the bell started to thud instead of ring one Sunday morning a couple of years ago, and the bell rope seemed longer than usual, examination revealed that the bell’s carriage had crumbled. Additionally, the steps inside the steeple were too dangerous to use and the copper sheathing meant to keep moisture out of the belfry had loosened at the seams and was letting water in.
Thanks to a small group of concerned parishioners, a matching grant from the Maine Community Foundation was awarded to cover much of the reconstruction costs. Now the church needs help from the community to come up with its end of the grant.
The charge for Monday’s supper is by donation. No donation is too small or too big, and all are encouraged to join in the event. Before or after attending the dinner, community members are invited to to explore the St Philip’s Bargain Basement, which will be open during the supper event.
