Maine Marine Patrol has called off the search for a man they feared jumped Tuesday night from the Sagadahoc Bridge because he has now been found by police.
The Sagadahoc Bridge spans the Kennebec River between Bath and Woolwich. At 9:38 p.m., Bath police received a report of a male sitting on the bridge’s rail. Lt. Robert Savary said officers searched around the river but didn’t locate anyone.
Savary said police checked Bath Iron Works’ video surveillance and while they could see a person walking on the bridge, they couldn’t confirm if the person left the bridge or jumped due to the poor quality of the video.
As a precaution, police say they are receiving help from Maine Marine Patrol, the Coast Guard, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office and BIW security.
Jeff Nichols, spokesman for the Maine Department of Marine Resources, said these agencies searched into the late hours of the night until the search had to be called off due to deteriorating conditions — strong currents, heavy rain and a thunderstorm.
Marine Patrol resumed the search at approximately 8 a.m. this morning with a plane and several boats searching up river to Abagadasset Point, based on the dynamics of the river and the incoming tide.
The search was called off at 2 p.m. after Bath police found the man they believe was on the bridge. Savary said he was found by safe in Bath.
