BOWDOIN

A Lewiston woman was killed in a collision in Bowdoin Wednesday afternoon.

The two-vehicle crash was reported at 1:12 p.m. at the intersection of West Road and Store Road. Neither driver had any passengers, reports the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department which is investigating the crash.

According to Sheriff Joel Merry, 37-year-old Amanda T. Gauvin of Lewiston died at the scene.

Merry said Gauvin was driving a 2003 Ford Focus and collided with a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Geraldine Scanlon, 29, of Sabattus, who was not injured.

“Ms. Gauvin was traveling north on the West Road and failed to stop at the stop sign,” Merry said in a press release. “She was struck on the driver’s side by the Suburban that was traveling east on the Store Road. The crash caused extensive damage to the Ford Focus and as a result Ms. Gauvin died of severe trauma.”

Merry said investigators don’t yet know why one vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign.

“As part of any fatal accident investigation, deputies will conduct a thorough investigation, including a reconstruction, to help determine any other causes,” he said.

The crash remains under investigation. Deputy Matthew Shiers is the lead investigator and was assisted at the scene by Lt. Brian Quinn. The crash is being reconstructed by members of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office and the Brunswick Police Department.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene along with personnel from Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Richmond fire departments and Lisbon Emergency Medical Services.
