Solemn November

Already we are halfway through November. The trees are mostly stripped of their leaves and the fall flowers have been tossed into the compost heap. The birds have begun their annual migration south, although some choose to stick around and tough it out. The hibernating animals are seeking shelter for the long winters nap, and the squirrels scurry about stocking up on nuts and such. On All Saints Day we celebrated those whose sacrifice and witness helped to build up the church, followed by All Souls Day when we commemorated all the Faithful departed. On Veteran’s Day we honored those who died in the service of our country. It seems as if it is a month dedicated to death and dying. Yet, in the midst of it all there is life. We celebrated our freedom by exercising our right to vote. Thanksgiving Day is just around the corner when we will gather together with family and friends to give thanks for our many blessings. The long winter may lie ahead, but let’s not despair, for we know that spring will come again and there will be resurrection and new life. That is God’s promise to us, and we can hold fast to that.
