The mother of a former Mt. Ararat High School student has organized a fundraiser to support a scholarship program in memory of her son.
The event to benefit the Rolando A. Amador scholarship will take place Wednesday at the 99 Restaurant in Topsham.
Diners will need to bring a voucher to the restaurant between 3-10 p.m. Wednesday to participate, with the eatery donating 15 percent of the guest check to the fund. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.
Amador passed away in February 2015 at the age of 22. His mother, Maria, said her son touched many lives in his 22 years.
“He was of a very noble heart and he liked to help others not only physically, but emotionally,” she said.
Rolando attended St. John’s Catholic School until eighth grade and then attended Mt. Ararat High School, where he graduated in 2011. He played lacrosse, soccer and basketball.
When he died, Rolando was a junior at the U.S. Naval Academy and a member of the 16th Company, majoring in mechanical engineering and participating in intramural sports. Prior to his time at the academy, he attended Naval Academy Preparatory School for one year.
Maria established the scholarship program two years ago, and aims to give two scholarships every year: One to a member of the Mt. Ararat boys lacrosse team aspiring to pursue higher education, and another for someone wishing to attend St. John’s. Both schools, Maria said, helped shape her son.
A former teammate of Rolando’s established an alumni game in his memory, which has helped raise money for the scholarship fund as well.
The scholarships are granted based on financial need, Maria said, and all of the money raised goes directly to scholarships because she covers all administrative expenses.
Losing her son has been very painful and presenting the scholarships for the first time last year was difficult, Maria said.
“One of the things I want to keep doing is keeping his legacy alive because he had a big legacy of honor, humility, giving to others and love for God,” she said.
The vouchers needed to participate in the Dining for a Cause event at 99 Restaurant can be found in The Times Record and also on the Rolando A. Amador Memorial Scholarship Facebook page.
People can also make a donation directly to the Rolando A. Amador Memorial Scholarship account at Key Bank in Brunswick or by mailing checks to Maria Amador at 22 Marshview Way, Harpswell, ME 04079. Checks should be payable to the Rolando Amador Memorial Scholarship.
The 99 Restaurant is located at 34 Topsham Fair Mall Road.
