WINSLOW — Brewer High School hockey coach David Shedd said this week that Lawrence would need to score a few goals to stop his high-flying Witches.
Turns out, a few wasn’t nearly enough for the Bulldogs, who lost 10-2 to the top-seeded Witches on Saturday at Sukee Arena.
“It’s really devastating,” said Lawrence forward Matt Woodbury, who scored two goals. “I thought we could keep it close. We just had too many breakdowns.”
Brewer (17-1-1) will play defending regional champ Presque Isle (15-4-0) in the Eastern B final at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the University of Maine.
Spencer Valley scored a hat trick to power the Witches, who, like the Bulldogs, competed in Eastern A last season. Jamie Williamson and Alec Pacheco each scored a pair of goals for Brewer, which scored at least 10 goals in a game for the sixth time this season.
“It feels great,” Valley said. “We made our opportunities count.”
Added Shedd on what makes the Brewer offense go: “Unselfishness, speed and they know how to finish.”
Lawrence (11-9-0) twice fell behind by a goal early, but both times Woodbury scored the equalizer to give the Bulldogs some momentum.
However, it was short-lived. Lawrence trailed 4-2 after the first period but then watched Brewer put the game away with a five-goal outburst in the second.
“We made a lot of mistakes and they capitalized,” Lawrence senior captain Jeshua Dearborn said.
The Witches scored four goals in the final 4 minutes, 20 seconds of the second to turn the game into a rout.
Brewer, which didn’t get its first power play until the opening three minutes of the third period, came into the game with some gaudy numbers.
The Witches averaged 6.9 goals a game during the regular season. They scored at least seven goals in 11 of their 19 games.
Nick Risser, Tyler White and Pacheco each scored at least 40 points. Throw in Evan Nadeau and Jason Chapman, and the Witches had five players with at least 30 points.
And all five figured heavily in the scoring Saturday in Sukee.
“Brewer is a good team,” Lawrence coach Dave Richard said. “They are No. 1 for a reason. We’re not used to that kind of speed. We just didn’t have the veteran team to keep up with their speed. They’re deep, too. They have three lines, which is unheard of in Class B.”
Brewer, which last lost on Dec. 19 (2-1 to Western A power Falmouth), has won 13 straight.
