LEWISTON — L/A Arts and Bates College will host “In the Blood,” a documentary film featuring live music, at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Olin Arts Center, 75 Russell St.

“In the Blood” employs film, photography, interviews, sound design and a live musical score to illustrate the life, skills and character of the turn-of-thelast century Maine lumbermen and river drivers.

A discussion with the film’s director and composer Sumner McKane and fellow composer Joshua Robbins will follow the screening.

“‘In The Blood’ sheds new light on the character, history, and importance of these legendary Maine men,” a release from organizers states. “The experience is a virtual journey into the 19th century Maine woods.”

“ Lumbermen were pioneers who created a self-contained working community in the woods, and on whose backs the state’s economy and history were largely established,” the release continues. “They were unique in their character, strength and skills, and they symbolize Maine’s gritty and resilient reputation.”

“In the Blood” aims to illustrate and celebrate these individuals by, in part, showing how they lived.

“By presenting a historical subject in a contemporary and entertaining manner — using multimedia paired with compelling live music — a history lesson becomes an entertaining virtual journey into a bygone world, the history of Maine,” the release states.

The musical score for “In the Blood” was composed to reflect the moods and environment of the films, photos and stories.

Tickets cost $6. For more information, call 782-7228 or visit www.batestickets.com.
