BRUNSWICK — Seven area schools in Brunswick and School Administrative District 75 are participating this week in an initiative to promote locally grown food and healthy eating habits.
Students at schools, including Harriet Beecher Stowe and Coffin elementary schools in Brunswick, will be able to sample fruits and vegetables throughout the week, based on a color assigned to each day.
“Colors Week will be a fun and interesting way to get students to try different foods they may not normally have," Scott Smith, food service director for both the Brunswick and SAD 75 schools, said in a press release.
In addition to trying out locally grown food, the schools will host visits from local farmers and hear talks about growing food in Maine and making healthy eating choices.
The participating schools also include Woodside Elementary School and Williams- Cone School in Topsham, Bowdoin Central School, Bowdoinham Community School and the Harpswell Community School.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
