LISBON FALLS Fire Capt. William Wallace Jr. opens a wall to extinguish a fire at a home on Larrabee Lane in Durham on Friday.
DURHAM — A Larrabee Lane home was badly damaged and three pets died in a fire that started in the kitchen just after 1 p.m. Friday.

According to Michael Brillant, public information officer for Durham Fire and Rescue, the home belongs to Connie and Martin Jacques. Neither was home at the time the blaze ignited.

Martin Jacques had left the home around 12:30 p.m. to go to the store. He returned minutes after 1 p.m. to see smoke spilling from the side door and fire coming out of the kitchen window. He went to a neighbor’s home and called 911.

Members of the first crew to arrive on scene saw fire coming out a kitchen door and window. They began extending hoses.

Brillant estimated that the fire was knocked down within 10 or 15 minutes, so firefighters could enter the building. The blaze was under control within 45 minutes of firefighters arriving on scene.

In addition to Durham, Lisbon Falls and Freeport fire departments responded to the scene, shuttled water and provided manpower. In all, about 30 firefighters fought the blaze, Brillant said.

Pownal fire department provided station coverage for Durham.

Brillant said two cats and a dog perished in the fire.

No human injuries were reported.

The fire caused extensive damage to the kitchen area, smoke and heat damage to the rest of the first floor and smoke damage to the second floor of the home — a 24-footby 36-foot, 1.5-story cape.

A local chapter of the American Red Cross had been contacted to help the Jacques find temporary accommodations, food and clothing, Brillant said. The Jacques did have insurance, Brillant said.

Late Friday afternoon, Brillant said a State Fire Marshal’s Office investigator confirmed that the blaze, of undetermined origin, started in the kitchen.
