BRUNSWICK — Habitat for Humanity/ 7 Rivers Maine recently gathered more than 100 volunteers at the Captain Daniel Stone Inn for a volunteer recognition event that honored those who built, weatherized, repaired or renovated homes or worked in the Habitat offices or ReStore during the past 20 years.

The theme for the event was “Celebrating Families,” and Habitat partner families spoke to the attendees about how their Habitat homes had changed their lives.

Habitat volunteer coordinator Michele Ober served as master of ceremonies.

“As we celebrate our 20th year of providing safe, affordable, sustainable housing in Brunswick, Harpswell and all of Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties, we wanted to provide an opportunity for our partner families and their children, ages 5-25, to personally thank the Habitat volunteers for their time, talents, and commitment to seeing families realize their dream of homeownership,” Ober said in a release.

The following annual volunteer awards were presented:

— Tim Mellen of Woolwich received the Leadership Award.

— The Executive Director’s Award went to Caralen MacKenzie- Hicks of Brunswick.

— Steve Hatt of Wiscasset received the President’s Award.

— The Golden Hammer Award was awarded collectively to the “Construction Regulars,” consisting of Tim Mellen, Woolwich; Gerry Brookes, Brunswick; Mike Connelly, Brunswick; Wayne Gilbert, Boothbay; Doug Hardy, Woolwich; Jim McGurty, Brunswick; David Sellers, Woolwich; George Shaw, Newcastle; and Hans van Willigen, Woolwich.

David Perron, the local Habitat for Humanity chapter’s executive director, concluded the event by speaking about the significant expansion of the organization’s mission, now that it weatherizes, repairs and rehabilitates existing homes.
