FREEPORT — Over the past few years, the Freeport High School baseball team has struggled against the solid teams of the Western Maine Conference, often coming out on the wrong end of blowouts.
On Thursday in the team’s opener, the Falcons put the shoe on the other foot, scoring nine runs en route to an 11-1 Mercy Rule victory over rival Yarmouth.
Freeport, 1-0 and slated to visit Cape Elizabeth on April 23, scored nine runs in the first inning, taking advantage of Clippers wildness.
Yarmouth pitchers walked seven Freeport hitters, and Kaleb Farmer and Luke LaMagna delivered key hits to give the Falcons a 9- 0 lead after an inning.
“They got a little bit wild, and we ran and were aggressive,” said Freeport coach Hank Ogilby. “I have preached for a long time that contact scores runs, and our lineup can hit one through nine. Yarmouth (0-1) didn’t hit too many balls hard (just one hit), and Sawyer Williams did a nice job.”
Farmer’s two- run single gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead, and LaMagna cleared the bases with a long double to cap the big first inning.
On the mound, Williams tossed four solid innings with three strikeouts and six walks, with Josh Weirich picking up one strikeout and one walk in the fifth.
Zach Greene and Dan Burke also singled for Freeport, with Burke’s hit ending the game in the fifth via the 10-run Mercy Rule.
“This is a tremendous way to start the season,” said Ogilby. “Yarmouth graduated a ton of players, but they needed this to feel confident and needed to beat the teams that have pounded us in the past.”
Girls lacrosse
In a back-and-forth WMC opener, York outlasted the Falcons for a 12-11 victory.
The Wildcats (1-0) held a 6-5 lead, but Freeport scored six straight goals for an 11-6 edge before York rallied for the victory.
Meredith Broderick led the Falcons (0-1) with four goals, while Alex Mitch contributed three goals, Jess Hench two goals and an assist, and Bethanie Knighton and Jocelyn Davee one goal each.
For York, Ruby Gribby had four goals, with Taylor Simpson and Shelby Spencer chipping in three goals apiece.
In goal, Freeport netminder Molly Lane turned aside 14 shots.
The Falcons are slated to host Cape Elizabeth on April 24.
Boys lacrosse
Paul Witte had four goals and two assists to lead Greely to season-opening 9-2 WMC victory over Freeport at Cumberland.
Brooks Belisle added two goals and two assists for Greely (1-0), while Matt Crowley chipped in a pair of goals.
Freeport (0-1) is slated to visit York on April 25.
