PORTLAND — A free shape note singing session is planned on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at The New Church, 302 Stevens Ave.
An introduction for beginners is planned from 1 to 1:30 p.m.
This four-part singing tradition, also known as sacred harp singing, originated in 18th century New England. It features robust harmony and is enjoying a revival nationwide, according to a news release.
This is not a performance, but rather a participatory event.
