Bath police tracked a trail of oil through Library Park on Sunday night to a vehicle that had run dry of engine oil after driving over a curb.

As a result of the car vs. curbing incident reported at 11:09 p.m. Sunday, Bath Police Lt. Robert Savary said the driver of the car, 26- year- old Alexander Chop, was arrested and charged with operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

Savary said Chop was traveling through the intersection of Winter and Washington streets and kept driving straight and apparently struck curbing, shattering the oil pan beneath the car. Oil spilled all over the place and continued to leak until the car became inoperable because there was no engine oil left.

Leaving a trail of oil, Chop continued driving through Library Park along the paved walkway though partially in the grass before finally exiting the north end of the park via Linden Street. Police found the car disabled and at rest at the intersection of Washington and Fremont streets and Chop at the wheel. Savary said there was also a dog in the car.

After a resident on Linden Street reported the incident, Savary said responding officers followed the oil trail to the car. Chops was arrested, ordered held for 18 hours for sobriety purposes, and taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail.
