PORTLAND (AP) — A Maine native is being sworn in as the second-in-command of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Vice Adm. John Currier will become the Coast Guard’s 28th vice commandant during today’s change-of-watch ceremony at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C.
Currier grew up in Westbrook and graduated from Portland’s Cheverus High School in 1970. He later graduated from the University of Southern Maine.
As vice commandant, Currier oversees the Coast Guard’s operations, strategic development, organizational governance, and management of more than 57,000 employees and 30,000 volunteers.
