BOOTHBAY HARBOR

Windjammer Days is coming, June 24-25, down in Boothbay Harbor. It’s a lot of fun for kids, which special activities just for children, including a pirate invasion.

Participating Windjammers will offer overnight trips or hourly cruises. A list of boat trips will be listed at the Friends of the Windjammers tent in Whale Park.

But there are also puppet shows, kids’ activities such as flag and sail making, book printing, and model boat building, lobster eating contests, cod fish races, sword fights, concerts, pirate “recruitment”(including lessons on pirate flags, pirate weapons, pirate dentistry, pirate food, and pirate cutlass lessons), antique boat parades, cannon lessons, and more. The event is capped off on Wednesday with a fireworks show over the harbor.

All the fun takes place down on the piers on the waterfront and in Whale Park. Most events are free, and most are kid-friendly. Because it’s happening in the middle of the week, Tuesday and Wednesday, there aren’t likely to be a lot of people coming up from Portland, but it’s always still a crush. Bring water and sunscreen, and make sure there are snacks available, or the kids are going to want saltwater taffy, which they can see being made right in the shop. On second thought, better bring wipes for saltwater taffy-sticky hands and faces.
