PORTLAND (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union is suggesting it may sue unless a Maine public school district stops offering single-gender classes.
The ACLU of Maine alleges that single-gender classes offered to fifth- and sixthgraders at the Willard School in Sanford appear to be based on gender stereotypes in violation of the Constitution and federal law. Examples include having girls discuss current events over cocoa while the boys earn points toward prizes from the National Football League by exercising.
The program is voluntary and the school also has mixed-gender classes at both grade levels.
The ACLU sent a letter to the district Monday that raised the possibility of litigation.
An attorney for the district tells The Portland Press Herald there is no education in Sanford based on stereotyping.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
