The first bicycle safety and inspection session for kids will run from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Bowdoinham Community School and kids should bring their bikes and helmets.
Lynn Spiro, The Town Landing restaurant owner located in downtown Bowdoinham, wrote in a press release that she decided to organize the event in anticipation of summer, a time when there are many children out riding bicycles. She contacted Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry and Chief Deputy Brett Strout to arrange the bicycle safety and inspection.
Strout will be on hand Saturday to do safety inspections that will center around children’s bicycles, bike helmets and rules of the road. There will not be a certified bicycle mechanic there to work on bikes, he emphasized, but there will be a police officer there to talk about safety and provide rules of the road for bicyclists, make sure helmets are worn properly and give a general once over inspection of bikes, do some very light mechanical adjustment such as straightening handle bars, and make referrals for repair where needed.
“Our goal is to make sure everyone has a safe summer on their bicycles as we enter into our summer season,” the release states.
Spiro hopes Saturday’s bicycle safety inspection will become a regular event. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department, she wrote, “was very receptive, and on board from the very start!”
