For more than 45 years our family members have spent either a part or all of our summers at the Chewonki Campground. Some of us refer to it as our home away from home. A business, yes it is. And among Wiscasset’s many fine businesses, it is a true gem. Yet it is much more than a business. It is a place of beauty enhanced by the untiring devotion of its owners and their daughters who are ever mindful that Chewonki is a family legacy.

The Airport Mater plan, if implemented in its present form, would desecrate a much loved area of natural elegance and devastate a business of prime importance, not only to that family, but also to the economic welfare of Wiscasset.

In all our years here (we are in our 80s) we are not aware of a campground in any nearby communities, which can match this very special one. But we are well aware of an airport in the town of Brunswick that can accommodate planes too large for Wiscasset.

With a strong sense of urgency, we plead with the citizens of the town and their leaders to rationally amend this plan so that a natural treasure, an adequate airport, and a family inspired business can continue to co-exist harmoniously, each contributing in its unique way to this town that we love to keep visiting.

History reveals that many compromises based on logic and common sense have worked admirably. Could this be an opportunity for Wiscasset to make history of its own?
