Brunswick Police Lt. Lynne Doucette escaped serious injury after the cruiser she was driving struck a moose early Saturday morning on Interstate 295 southbound.

According to a press release from the Brunswick Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 3:26 a.m. Police received a report that a moose was wandering on the highway in the area of mile marker 28 southbound.

Doucette responded to check the area, and as she neared mile marker 24, she spotted a vehicle in the breakdown lane. As she prepared to pull behind the stopped vehicle, Doucette’s cruiser struck a 500-pound bull moose, according to Deputy Chief Marc Hagan.

The moose struck the front of the cruiser, smashing the windshield. It then rolled over and dented the roof of the cruiser before falling onto the trunk. The vehicle sustained heavy damage and is out of commission.

The moose died as a result of the impact of the crash, according to police.

Doucette was transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick for treatment of minor injuries. She was released soon after, Hagan said.

Brunswick police and rescue workers, along with the Maine State Police, responded to the incident. State police continue to investigate the crash.
