AUGUSTA (AP) — The agency that manages the 109- mile Maine Turnpike is eliminating 20 positions.
Maine Turnpike Authority Executive Director Peter Mills said the job cuts will save $1.25 million a year.
He told the Bangor Daily News the authority is eliminating 13 supervisor positions and consolidating their duties into four newly created positions. Customer service, building maintenance and clerk positions are also being cut, and six seasonal plow truck drivers won’t be called back when winter arrives.
The cuts won’t take effect until Jan. 1, 2013.
The restructuring is the result of an organizational study Mills requested several months ago challenging managers to develop plans to get by with fewer supervisors.
The authority has 300 fulltime employees and about 150 seasonal and on-call workers.
