BRUNSWICK — Mechanics Savings Bank recently awarded 2014 Mt. Ararat High School graduate Marie Ring and Brunswick High School graduate Shannon Viola $1,000 Banking on the Future scholarships to attend the college of their choice this fall.

Ring is the daughter of Beth and Herbert Ring. She will begin working toward a bachelor of arts in biology at the University of Maine in Orono.

Viola is the daughter of John and Susan Viola. This fall, she will be attending Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania and plans to major in English.

For more than 20 years, Mechanics Savings Bank has provided scholarships to assist high school seniors bound for college or technical school with their higher education goals. This year, the Banking on the Future scholarship program awarded $17,000 to students from local high schools, including Edward Little, Lewiston, Saint Dominic, Leavitt, Lisbon, Oak Hill, Poland, Gray/New Gloucester, Brunswick, Mt. Ararat and Windham.

Students are selected by their high school guidance department, based on their accomplishments in and out of the classroom and their service to others. Candidates must demonstrate academic success, service to school, community and/or family, and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Mechanics Savings Bank plans to offer Banking on the Future scholarships again in 2015. The scholarship application can be downloaded from the bank’s website at www.mechanicssavings.com or it can be obtained from the guidance office at participating high schools. The application process begins in January and typically ends in early April. Deadlines vary by high school.
