I am writing to ask Bath residents to support the proposed playground at the old YMCA site. As a mother of two young children, this project is important to me; however, the benefits of a downtown playground extend beyond just “simple” playtime for children.

In “The Benefits of Parks: Why America Needs More City Parks and Open Space” author Paul Sherer states: “City parks and open space improve our physical and psychological health, strengthen our communities, and make our cities and neighborhoods more attractive places to live and work.” Playgrounds help build communities by giving neighbors a place to meet and connect. Children make new friends, moms and dads (and grandparents) form new bonds with neighbors, and local businesses benefit from the increased traffic. The proposed site is walking distance of my favorite shops and restaurants, and these businesses are certain to see the economic advantage of a nearby playground.

Playgrounds are not just about sliding down a slide or swinging on a swing; playgrounds improve social, physical, and cognitive development in children. Children are shown to have increased self-confidence when they are able to “master” a new element of the playground. Playgrounds help battle physical inactivity and obesity. They get kids moving!

In addition, numerous studies also show the economic benefit of parks and playgrounds on communities. Nearby neighborhoods see increased property values, higher tax assessments, and homeowners are more likely to buy a home located near a park or playground.

Please let your councilor know that Bath cares about families as well as a prosperous downtown.
