EDGECOMB — Three students from the Center for Teaching and Learning were recognized in the 2012 Sarah Mook Memorial Poetry Contest.

In the grades 6-8 division, eighth-grader Morganne Elkins of Edgecomb won first place for her poem “Mountains,” earning her a prize of $100. Seventh-grader Xander Bartone of Bath took third place and a $25 prize for “The Litter.”

Fifth-grader Maggie Larson of Southport received first place in her age division for “Where Poems Hide from Me,” accompanied by a check for $100.

In addition, sixth-graders Noah Jordan of Alna and Nicholas Miaoulis of Nobleboro were finalists.

Sarah Mook was a Pennsylvania third-grader and budding poet who died in 1995. Her father established the contest in her honor to acknowledge and honor student poets. Entrants hailed from across the United States, as well as Canada and Australia.

The winning poems will be published on the Poetry Writers in the Schools website.
